One Day Trip. Martin Parr (1st Edition)

£80.00

Description:

Mission Photographique Transmanche invited a number of photographers to photograph the transformation of the areas affected by the construction of the Channel tunnel between England and France. Martin Parr’s ‘One Day Trip’ was the result of his commission. Other commissioned photographers included Josef Koudelka and John Davies.

At the height of Margaret Thatcher's overhaul of the British economy, employment and wages were down while taxes and prices went up. As prices rocketed, British citizens found it more economical to take a quick trip over to France in order to stockpile things such as alcohol and cigarettes. This was further encouraged when the Sun newspaper offered readers day trips to Calais in France for £1. In France for a few hours the passengers would heavily shop the duty free and much cheaper shoreline supermarches.
